A bedroom rug is judged with bare feet at seven in the morning, which is a different test from every other room in the house. Here is how to size one to the bed rather than to the room, and the three layouts that actually work.
01 · Measure from where your feet land
The useful measurement is not the room and not the bed. It is the strip of floor you step onto when you get up. Everything else is decoration.
That strip wants at least 24 inches of rug beyond the side of the mattress, and preferably 30. Less than that and you step half on, half off, which is worse than no rug because your body expects one surface and finds two.
02 · The three layouts
Under the bed, extending past three sides. The rug starts roughly a third of the way down the bed, below the bedside tables, and runs out past the foot. This is the one that makes a bedroom look finished, and it is also the most expensive because most of the rug lives under the mattress where nobody sees it.
For a queen, that means 8 by 10. For a king, 9 by 12. A double can work at 6' x 9' if the room is tight.
Two runners, one each side. Half the cost and, in a small room, often the better answer. A 2' x 6' or 3' x 8' down each side gives you exactly the warm landing you wanted without paying for the part under the bed.
Across the foot. A single rug turned sideways at the end of the bed. Works when there is a bench or a window seat down there and nothing else in the room needs anchoring.
03 · The rule people get wrong
Bedside tables sit on the floor, not on the rug. Start the rug below them, roughly a third of the way down the bed. If the tables sit on the rug, their legs create four dents you will notice every time you change the sheets, and the rug reads as wall-to-wall carpet that was cut short.
The one exception is a very large room where the rug is genuinely defining a zone rather than dressing the bed. Then everything sits on it, including the chair in the corner.
04 · Why bedrooms are the easiest room to over-decorate
You look at a bedroom floor less than any other floor in the house, and you look at it in low light. A pattern that reads as lively in a showroom reads as busy at eleven at night.
Our bedroom edit leans on the softer end for that reason: washed grounds, faded fields, low contrast. If you want to go quieter still, washed solids is the family with the least going on. For warmth without a strong pattern, blush and cream and neutral do most of the work.
05 · The part nobody mentions
Bedrooms collect more than people expect. Skin, hair, dust, whatever the dog brings up onto the bed. It is the room where a washable rug earns its keep quietly rather than dramatically: no wine, just a wash every few months that a wool rug would need a professional for.
Cold, gentle, spin off, dry flat. The method is in the care guide, with a longer version in how to wash a rug in a washing machine.
If the room has a sloped ceiling, a chimney breast or a bed pushed into an alcove, standard sizes stop helping. Anything in the range can be cut to measure, any width from 24 to 120 inches.
